Instructor's Reference Guide for Differential Expressions2: Key Experiments in Developmental Biology

by Mary S. Tyler, Ronald N. Kozlowski, and Scott F. Gilbert

This information is also in the “Documents” folder of the DVD: Differential Expressions2.pdf

Differential Expressions2 is a 2-DVD set containing eight videos, each of which presents the life and work of a prominent scientist in the field of developmental biology. Each video is approximately 8-22 minutes in length, and includes interviews with the scientist, original footage of experiments, and detailed explanations of their work as well as background information to set their work into context, with illustrations, videos, and photographs. The scientists and work depicted are as follows: on Disc 1-Malcolm Steinberg and sorting out; Elizabeth Hay and extracellular matrix; Walter Gehring and transdetermination; John Tyler Bonner, life cycles and chemotaxis; on Disc 2-Lauri Saxén and primary induction; Nicole Le Douarin and neural crest cells; James Lash, somites and thalidomide; John W. Saunders, Jr. and limb formation.

The following list cross-references topics covered in Developmental Biology, Eighth Edition, with topics covered in the Differential Expressions2 videos. Showing segments from Differential Expressions2 in the classroom is an excellent way to introduce students to the people behind some of the great discoveries in developmental biology and the exciting work they performed, while at the same time reinforcing important facts and concepts.

Pages 443-469

Refer to Lash video

This chapter discusses the development of the somites and the urogenital system in the vertebrate. These, along with the formation of the limb are further discussed in the Lash video.
